The Finished Magazine Advert.

This is the finished ancillary task. I am now going to analyse this advert.

The Heading:
The colour of the heading is red because the it signifies Romance and the fact that it's the only writing that's coloured is because I want it to stand out. The main aim of the video is a love story and the use of red colour sends out the message as red associates with romance and love as well as passion.

The Background/Image:
The image is in black and white, however it was originally taken in colour. Yes, there is a reason to why it is in black and white. These colours you don't often see in magazine adverts therefore it would easily catch the audience's attention amongst those other bright coloured magazine advert. The aim of this whole use of rare colours is keep it sweet and simple rather than packed and filled with bright colours which could grab an individual's attention instantly. The image is of the couple holding hands, holding hands signifies love and attachment which is what this music video is about. It shows that they don't want to be apart from each other...

The Scan Code:
Many youngsters seem to own a blackberry and since i am an owner myself i know how this works. The Blackberry app world consist of an app which you can download for free and scan things to find out prices or where something is available. I think the use of this barcode is effective in my magazine cover because my intended audience is teenagers, Teens usually own blackberry's and thus they would want to scan to find out whats available for them.

Audience theory: Hypodermic Model.

Here, the messages in the media texts are injected into the audience by the powerful, syringe-like media. The audience is powerless to resist these messages therefore it's been said that the media works like a drug and the audience is drugged, addicted, doped or duped.

During the discussion in class, we compared two tv channels. We found out that Channel 5 makes less profit than ITV as their shows are bought from America however they seem to make profit through all those advertisements. We all make contributions through buying the products via adverts or youtube. For example the Shake 'n' Vac product, we never really thought this could exist but then we saw the catchy advert and this compelled many to buy this product and try!

The Effects model:

  • The consumption of media texts have a negative influence on us which makes us powerless and passive.
  • The 'Sun' and 'News of the World' is owned by Rupert Murdock, these are popular institution that have had and have a big influence on the audiences.
Key Evidence for the effects model:
  1. The Frankurt School theorised in the 1920's and 30's that the mass media has acted to resist and control audiences to the benefit of corporate capitalism and governments.
-Looked at Propaganda Films
-Very Critical
-Tried influencing audiences.

2. The BOBO Doll experiment.
This is a very controversial piece of research that apparently proved that children copy violent activities. This was conducted by Albert Bandura in 1961.

IN THE EXPERIMENT:
  • Children watched a video where an adult violently attacked a clown doll called "bobo doll".
  • The Children were then taken in a room with attractive toys that they were not permitted to touch.
  • The Children were then led to another room with Bobo Dolls
  • 88% of the children imitated the violent behaviour that they had earlier viewed. 8 months later 40% of the children reproduced the same violent behaviour.
-E.g Playing C.O.D Modern Warfare could influence Children because they use violent tactics. Some say it depends how exposed you are to it whereas some say when you are matured, the less seriously you take it.
  • Bobo doll designed tn a way for it to be attacked. (It bounces back up making the child angrier)
  • There is no evidence that children will imitate this in the future.
The conclusion reached from this experiment by Bandura is that children will imitate violent media content.

There are many problems with this experiment, What do you think are the flaws with this methodology? Does it indeed prove that children will imitate violent content?

-> The effects model (backed up by the bobo doll experiment) is still dominant theory used by politicians, some parts of the media and some religious parts of the media and some religious organisations in attributing violence to the consumption of media texts.

  • Key examples cited as causing or being contributory factors are:
- The Film Child's Play 3 is suspected to be the cause of the death of 3 year old Jamie Bulger. It has been said that the 2 ten year old boys were neglected from childhood and as they watched Child's play 3 couple of hours being committing the murder shows that this movie could have played a significant part in the murder. The youngest killers of UK.

More Audience Theory..

There are three theories of audience that we can apply to help us come to a better understanding about the relationship between text and audiences.
  1. The effects model or the Hypodermic Model
  2. The uses and Gratifications Model
  3. Reception Theory
THE EFFECTS MODEL:

- The Consumption of media texts has an effect or influence upon the audience.
- Everytime we watch a media text, it has an effect upon the audience: this could be an negative influence.
- Audiences are passive and powerless to prevent this influence.

Example:
The "SHAKE 'n' VAC" advert has been around for 30 years presented by Jenny Logan. The shake and vac was not a necessarily product, many did not know it ever existed but it's the advert that compels the audience to buy the product and try it.

Adverts seems to have a big impact on our lives and this is very profitable for the institution.
Other adverts like Go Compare, Coco-Pops and Cillit Bang have had a huge impact on the audience recently. These are the most successful advertising campaign in the UK.

Critical Audience Theory

In  today's lesson, we learned about the critical audience theory which is vital for us for exams.
At the debut of the lesson, we were asked three question:

  1. Why do audience choose to consume certain media texts?
  2. How does the audience consume these texts?
  3. What happens when we consume these texts?
We then discussed about these question in the class with everyone.

Secondly we talked about the 'MODEL OF THE MEDIA' where we found the example of texts and dicussed how and why are they being delivered to us.

Example of Texts:
  • Websites
  • Newspapers
  • Radio programmes
  • Tv Programmes
  • Adverts
  • Billboards
  • Magazines
  • Cinemas
  • Computer Games.
Audience: Relationship between audience and text? - They CONSUME the media text.
  • What?
  • Why?
  • How?
  • What happens?
Institution:
  • Disney
  • Warner Bros
  • Cinemas: Vue Cine-world, IMAX
  • Independent Cinemas: Odeon, Showcase
  • MTV
  • YouTube
  • Sony
  • BBC, ITV
  • Newspaper publishers
 Produce
 Promote
 Advertise
 Distribution
 Exhibition

The Media institution delivers Media Texts to the audiences.

Final Transaction: Media Institution receives finance from the Audience.

Magazine Advert So Far...

So far we have included everything mentioned below...

The Use of Black,Grey and White.
I have decided to use these colours simply because they stand out. White is often associated with Purity,Innocence,Faith and perfection. The colour white reflects the relationship between the girl and the boy which is meant to be pure as they have true love towards each other.
Black however is the complete opposite of White. It is known to represent hatred, fear and negativity. There isn't exactly negativity or hatred between their relationship but the black colour could represent the distance between these two as though being together they are far apart. Grey is similar to the colour black. It represents uncommitted feeling , depression and emotions. Though it seems that the guy is committed to the girl but this is not the case. He is unaware that he is being negligent towards her.

The use of red colour.
The red colour is two sided. It can represent danger, anger, fire but on the positive side it can represent strong emotions like love, excitement, romance, passion and energy. In this case, it is the representation of their love. The red colour is only used once and that is in a quote from the lyrics... That line summarises the content of the music video.

The title.
Stargazer is the title of the music video, the digipak and the magazine advert. It is originally means a day dreamer. This guy in the music video dreams big. He loves his girlfriend but also wants to have a great career. But is it possible to have everything you want?

The sub-title.
It's not exactly a sub-title but as its under the actual title thus i called it that. It says "Official Album Release". This is to inform the audience about the release of the music.

The Blackberry Barcode:
Blackberry is used by millions around the world. I have included the barcode as to many scanning barcode is fascinating and by scanning that barcode they will get access to information on the upcoming music video instead of actually going to the website.  It will be easier to access this.

The Star Rating.
It is important to have a star review on any piece of release as it informs the audience before hand whether it is a good or bad music video. This is usually the one thing people notice before buying the music as they need to know if they are paying for something worthy or not.

Itunes:
Itunes is a popular source of music and is used worldwide for downloading music, This is advantageous for iphone or ipod users as it's available for them to buy anytime. This also increases sale of music and avoids illegal downloads.

HMV:
HMV is where you people can buy CD's and Albums of artist thus i thought it will be a good idea to have this on the magazine cover as it helps informing the audience as to how they will be able to access this music.

The Website:
I have included a website so that my audience have access to through different sources to the music video. Many don't own a blackberry and iphone therefore the only source could be the internet and they can log on to it so that they can see the music video. I have included offers on the magazine cover and the audience can access it on the website itself.

The Release date:
Any music magazine advert has to announce the release date as this informs the audience of when the music will be available to them. Its an excitement for the audience to wait for their product to be delivered on a specific date.

Since we've been asked for some extra shots, my partner has gone filming.  I am only missing the image which i need to edit an put on the cover.

Final Editing.

Today is the day!

My partner is busy doing the final editing of our music video, It has all been put together but to move on we need the teacher's advice as to how to make it better before uploading.

I am extremely proud of my partner and our team work as we are amateur at using such advanced technologies but we got most work done in this whole week.

As you are aware, we need to create a magazine advert as part of our coursework task. I have started with it but very confused to what imagine will be appropriate.

I am using the Adobe Photoshop on Imac to be able to create this magazine advert.

I am finding photoshop a little hard to use as this is the first time i have ever used it. However to make sure i am able to complete this magazine advert i am watching tutorials on youtube that could help me step by step.

I have managed to finish all the writing part on the magazine advert however i am still waiting on the image so that i can just finish it off.
