Treatment Sheet: The Resources we may need.- Possible Props and Locations.

The Main Props
From all the planning we've done, The most important prop for the video is the 'Guitar' which I can easily get hold of since my sibling has a collection of music instrument and The Guitar is the symbol of his dream, his passion for music!

Another prop will be a car, this will be also easily accessible as family members and friends are drivers and also own a car. The main reason i am using a car is because many audience's from the focus group told us that they can almost imagine the artist sitting on a car an playing his guitar while gazing at the sky dreaming to be big!

The Setting/ Location
Location wise we will have to use the school's stage as they have the light's which will look pretty realistic.

This is a picture i took from a school on the School's Anniversary and it looks decent to have a performance on that stage.
Our next locations will be London city, most probably the bridge, Hyde park, London eye and Trafalgar square and also the park nearby our area.

Finally, My main actors will be a male and a female who will have great chemistry! I will also have my friends as audiences.

This is not my actual actors but i need people to be comfortable with each other like them! I will also have a group of people to act as co actors however I am not too sure yet because we have to see how the music video goes first.

Treatment Sheet: Rough outline of initial ideas.

So now me and my partner had been discussing the locations, props and actors since a few weeks and now it's time to get them down on PAPER!

<- Overall ideas of Actors, props, costume and settings
<- Ideas of the music video moral itself.
<- an idea of what will be included on the picture of our digipak.
Matches the song!

Information on Copyright.

What is Copyright?
(From Staffordshire University)
"Copyright protects the physical expression of ideas. As soon as an idea is given physical form, e.g. a piece of writing, a photograph, music, a film, a web page, it is protected by copyright. There is no need for registration or to claim copyright in some way, protection is automatic at the point of creation. Both published and unpublished works are protected by copyright.
Copyright is normally owned by the creator of the work, e.g. an author, composer, artist, photographer etc. If the work is created in the course of a person's employment, then the copyright holder is usually the employer.
Copyright is a property right and can be sold or transferred to others. Authors of articles in academic journals, for example, frequently transfer the copyright in those articles to the journal's publisher. It is important not to confuse ownership of a work with ownership of the copyright in it: a person may have acquired an original copyright work, e.g. a painting, letter or photograph, but unless the copyright in it has expressly also been transferred, it will remain with the creator.
Copyright is regulated by law, the main statute in the UK being the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA). This was amended in October 2003 by the Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003 which incorporated into UK law the changes required by the EU Copyright Directive."

How have we used it?
Well before we get started with our music video it was necessary for us to gain the writer's copyright approval before doing anything to stop unnecessary problems! You will find a screen grab of the approval from our chosen artist on one of the earlier post's.

Famous Album Art Analysis. (Digipak)

This is one interesting cover I found is Katy Perry's Teenage Dream Digipak while researching on the internet.

The Front Cover.

The Back Cover

The Disk Cover.
This album of Katy Perry was a huge hit due to one of the song called 'California Girls' which was all about girls living this fun, luxurious, amusing, exotic life in the summer. The only reason i think that this was such a hit was due to the video which added value. It was absolutely fascinating when you see people coming out of jelly's and Katy lying on a cloud which was in fact candy floss. It was a sweet filled video! This was shown on the digipak cover where the disk cover is of a candy and the background of the front cover is pink with images of Katy Perry on the cloud while inside she worn clothes made of candies! Many people who own this have said that the album also smells of candyfloss which also increases the sale and popularity of this album as it is totally unique!

The Complete Analysis!:

Digipak Research.

Our task now is to make a digipak which consists on 6 Frames, For which we are researching the purpose of it and ideas for our own. At the moment we haven't got an idea of what we are going to do but we are looking a sites like 'Coverdude.com' to help us. Below you will find some information on the site and any other info.

What is a Digipak?
Digipak is a patented style of CD, DVD Packaging. It has become popular by holding CD and DVD's from the same artist, combining the release of a new CD with a DVD.Digipak typically consists of a book-style paper board or card outer binding
with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. It usually consists of 4-6 frames and sometimes some may contain free offers like music downloads or vouchers.

What is the purpose of a Digipak?
Digipak packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and tall DVD Digipak is used as a premium package for DVDs and sets.

What to include on a Digipak?
On a digipack you will usually find:

  • 4-6 Panels though our aim is 6!
  • Spine
  • Track list
  • Bar code
  • Disk impression
  • Membership postcard/ flier
  • Band information section/ booklet
  • Free image/ Postcards or offers.

I am now looking at the site 'Coverdude.com', It looks pretty full with different types of personalized and professional covers such as DVD,Magazine and CD covers that can be used for free! My aim is to make my own digipak therefore I will be using this site as a guide to help me.

How did we find the right Music?

At the start of the coursework, I missed a week as I was away but My Partner tried finding music on unsigned.com but since she couldn't, She looked on Youtube. Here she was able to find an artist with the perfect music but if you look, in our previous post's you'll find that the music was too short. Then to share the work I also helped looking and I found 3 really good Artists that sounded proffesional and are also British. We then emailed the artists to see which one replies first then we can get started. But there again, PROBLEMS! The first one was good but the lyrics were really fast and the music quality wasn't as good either so we tried considering our 2nd Choice. Me and My Partner were so happy with it as it had good lyrics and music but yet again when we discussed it with our teacher, the lyrics were really fast and it took a lot of time to get in the actual song so we CHANGED! The third option was the finally approved as it was good music, good lyrics and decent for someone normal to sing to, So we got approval from both of our Teacher and the artist.

I think Youtube was just the perfect place as it has so many options of music and It really helped us to find our right music and get access to contact our Artist.

Finding the Right Music!

Before we found our unsigned artist, me and my partner looked on sites like 'Unsigned.com'

About Unsigned.Com:
Unsigned.com is dedicated to providing independent Artists from solo, trio to bands, the best outlet possible to be heard globally on the Internet. It also provides them with an oppurtunity and hope that a producer will probably like their music and sign them.  While Surfing this site we found out that the artist's were mainly American however though their music was good, unfortunately we couldn't use them. As for our coursework we only need a British Based Artist.

Alike Artists' :)

From the audience research we did, we found that everyone thought that a similar artist to our artist would be Jesse McCartney and Jay Sean.

Our Artist 'Arjun Artist'

The Alike Artist's

Jesse McCartney

Jesse McCartney  is an American singer-songwriter, actor and voice actor. McCartney achieved fame in the late 1990s on the daytime drama All my Children as JR Chandler. He later joined boy band Dream Street, and eventually branched out into a solo musical career. Additionally, McCartney has appeared on shows such as Summerland and Greek. He also appears in the Kingdom hearts video game series as Roxas and Ventus.

Jay Sean
Jay Sean, is a British singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer and record producer He debuted in the UK's Asian underground scene as a member of the Rishi Rich Productions with "Dance with you", which reached #12 on the UK Singles chart in 2003. This led to him being signed to Virgin Records and having two UK top 10 hits as a solo artist in 2004: "Eyes on you" at #6 and "Stolen" at #4. They were included in his critically acclaimed debut album Me against Myself which, though only moderately successful in the UK, sold more than two million copies across Asia and remains his most successful album to date.
He eventually left Virgin in 2006 and founded his own independent label, Jayded Records. After a gap of nearly four years, he returned in 2008 with "Ride it ", which reached #11 in the UK and topped the charts in several Eastern European countries, including Romania where it was one of the best selling singles of the year. It was followed by hits such as "Maybe", which reached #7 on the Japan Hot 100,and "Tonight". They were included in his second album, My Own Way, which became his most successful album on the UK Albums Chart, reaching #6, and topped the UK R&B Charts. At around this time, he began increasingly incorporating electropop sounds into his R & B music.[10]
Since the end of 2008, has he been signed to Cash Money Records . In 2009, his American debut single "Down" topped the Billboard Top 100, making him the first solo artist of South Asian Origin and first UK urban act to top the Hot 100. It was the seventh-best selling song of 2009, having sold more than three million copies in the United States that year, eventually reaching four million sales in the United States and six million sales worldwide, making him the most successful British/European male urban artist in US chart history. It was soon followed by another hit, "Do you remember", which has sold more than a million copies in the US,and entered the top ten on the Hot 100.

Audience Feedback On Music Choice (Focus Group)

Me and my team mate has recently interviewed students on our chosen music 'Stargazer featuring Arjun Artist and Raxstaar'. The 3 main questions asked were:

-Did you like the music?
- Can you think of any alike artist?
-If you were making this music video with the same song, What would your idea for the video be?

Below is the video:

Illustrations of Audience Research

Below you'll find a wordle of our audience research and all the things we've found were from our video above.

Wordle: Stargazer

What we found out?
By creating this focus group on our music choice, it has helped me and my partner to make decisions on what will our music video look like. Many of the people we interviewed were around the age of 15-18 and this is the intended target audience for my music video therefore it is important to know what they think when it comes to an R 'n' B music. This genre is very famous in our modern world therefore it was approved by the majority.  We found out some ideas we can include on our music video for example use of candles and simple things like that we were told which we included on our music video.

How will it help us?
This has helped us in various ways, me and my partner had good ideas of our videos at first but we didn't realise that it will be pretty hard for us to bring action to those ideas. The focus group helped us get more ideas that could be useful, some people suggested that the singer should be driving the car whereas others say he should be sitting on top of the car. Since not many of us drive, it would have been hard getting a guy to drive if he doesn't know how to! Therefore we could just stick to the idea of him sitting on top of a car and singing. It is simplicity of our music video that will make it beautiful to watch.

What have we learnt?
Through the focus group we've learnt many thing, for example we learn more of the choice of the intended audience and what is it that they'd liken to see in a music video. A better question i personally think that should have been asked was what is your favourite genre?, Everyone's choice on music varies therefore it would have been good to know what they prefer. Being a teenager myself and being around my friends, i realised that R 'n' B does have a higher popularity than the other genres as we all prefer to listen to it.

Arjun Artist - The Man himself!♫♪

Arjun Artist:
Arjun is a London-based singer, songwriter and producer. In 2010, he was hailed in 'The Independent' as one of the rising stars in the British Asian music scene, after creating a buzz with his debut single 'Remember Tonight'. Equally comfortable performing solo with acoustic guitar or backed by street dancers, Arjun has become a force to be reckoned with live. In his short career, he has already supported US superstars such as Jagged Edge & Blackstreet, and has performed at numerous prestigious venues across the UK and South Asia, singing to crowds of over 30,000.

I have found an interview by an asian channel B4U TV UK where we learn more about Arjun's career and more about him. Below i have copied the interview but i am also going to include the link to B4U TV.

1) For those who haven't heard of Arjun, tell us how your career in music started?
Well I think it all began at the age of about 12, when I started playing guitar and writing songs. I was in loads of bands at school, and then began performing as a solo artist at uni events and club gigs in London . Things took off when I won an Urban Talent show run by DJ Kayper and Richard Blackwood. This gave me the push I needed to take things more seriously. Later that year I released my first promo track, Aishwarya's Eyes, which was picked up by a lot of radio DJ's (including Punjabi Hit Squad on BBC 1xtra). I guess things just went from there!

2) You're a producer as well as a singer/songwriter, what tracks have you worked on so far? Do you have a signature style for the music you produce?
I love all music and so have worked with a variety of artists of different styles and genres, ranging from Tamil Rock bands, to Mauritian R&B singers, to 16-year old girl rappers from East London !
I recently produced a Hindi album with Sony India for the emerging sensation Shivali - which is being released in early November. Another artist I have worked with a lot is the incredibly talented Hindi Pop-rock singer Kee. Look out for her next single dropping soon as well.

3) You play a number of instruments, as well as beatbox! How do you incorporate all of your talents into your music? My mother encouraged me to learn the piano from the age of about 5…and I am so glad that she did! I then fell in love with music and I ended up learning the recorder, flute, saxophone, guitar, drums and bass. I actually only started singing much later...I was classically trained on lots of instruments first.
Beatboxing is something that I was taught more recently by a friend…and now I am obsessed! It is definitely an interesting element to add to a performance for a bit of variety.

4) What was it like performing alongside Jagged Edge and Blackstreet?
I think supporting Jagged Edge and Blackstreet has been one of the best moments of my career so far. 90s R&B is my favourite genre and I grew up listening to those guys (along with the likes of 112 and Donell Jones) so it was an amazing feeling to share the same stage!

5)  Congratulations on your debut single ‘Remember Tonight' tell us a bit about the track?
Thank you :) My debut single ‘Remember Tonight' is an up-tempo club track with a twist. The story the song tells is actually about a break-up: the guy has finally accepted that the relationship is over, but begs the girl to just remember this night - their one last night together...
he song is written by myself, and co-produced by myself and the talented Charles Bosco. It is available to buy on iTunes now - so go get it.
6) The track has a great music video! How did you come up with the concept?
It was directed by a guy called Kevin Batchelor, who has worked with a few other artists in the scene, and I think he did a great job! I wanted the video to have a very ‘ London ' feel because…well…I am a Londoner and proud :) It was primarily shot on roof terraces and along the embankment, interspersed with studio shots alongside dancers. We wanted the storyline to come through so all those shots are in colour and the rest in black & white.

7) You have worked alongside a variety of artists, are there any that you really enjoyed collaborating with?
I have indeed worked with a lot of artists in the scene! I have worked a lot with a Hip-Hop group called 789 Crew, and our summer tune ‘My Lady' received around 100,000 downloads. We have had a lot of fun performing that track at Melas around the country.
I recently collaborated with 8 MC's on a charity song for Pakistan called ‘United We Stand'. The song reached #55 on the iTunes Hiphop Charts and all proceeds have gone to the DEC Flood Appeal.
I would say that the two producers that I have enjoyed working with the most are Charles Bosco and Zaheer. They have very different styles but both are mad talented!

8) What have you got planned for the near future? Any other forthcoming singles for release?
I am currently still promoting this single – pushing it out to TV and radio etc. I am hoping to drop my next single in October, followed by my album early next year. I can't wait to show people all the stuff I have been working on! Lots more in the pipeline…
